Konnichiwa!

All K-6 students at Calare Public School participate in Japanese lessons. Each class studies Japanese for one 30-minute lesson per week.

In K-2 the objective in the classes will be to stimulate students' interest in Japanese and to make learning a foreign language as fun, interesting and interactive as possible. Students engage in songs and games to learn about topics including: greetings, numbers, colours, and animals.

In years 3 and 4, we will study the same topics but include a cultural aspects such as riding on the shinkansen, seasons, festivals and folktales.

In year 5 and 6, students will learn to recognize the basic Japanese alphabet, called hiragana. This is a 46 character phonetic alphabet. These classes will develeop oral communication skills and their intercultural understanding. These outcomes will be achieved through oral practice, song, games and other cultural activites.

Research demonstrates that learning another language assists in:

- achieving higher results in literacy and numeracy

- improved memory

- longer attention span

- gives an insight into anohter culture

- being more flexible, creative and divergent in their thinking

- building multitasking skills

- ability to switch between tasks

- switching between two systems of speech, writing and structure

- developing a better ear for listening

- having more flexible viewpoints on the broader world
